Dónal Foreman is an Irish filmmaker living in New York City. He has been making films since he was 11 years old. Since then, he has written, directed and co-produced 3 feature films and dozens of short films. The Irish Times has called him “one of our very best young filmmakers”, and his features have been praised by the Hollywood Reporter, Sight & Sound, the Guardian and Film Comment. He has been nominated twice for the Irish Film & TV Academy Awards, for the Rising Star Award in 2014 and for Best Documentary in 2020. His second feature The Image You Missed premiered at Rotterdam and has gone on to screen at over 40 festivals in 20 countries including Edinburgh, CPH:DOX and Viennale, winning nine awards including the Grand Jury Prize at BAFICI. The Irish Times recently declared it one of the 50 best Irish films ever made.
As a film editor, Dónal has collaborated with artists and companies including Allison Janae Hamilton, Derek Fordjour and Irish Modern Dance Theater. As a critic, he has been published in Cahiers du Cinema, the Brooklyn Rail and Filmmaker Magazine. As a film programmer, he has curated film series for the Irish Film Institute, La cinémathéque française, Spectacle Theater and Metrograph. As a teaching artist, he was worked with public school students across New York City for the Tribeca Film Institute, Education Video Center and other organizations.
